Vincent Armenta: Chumash Tribe united in choosing leadership

"When voting members of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians cast their ballot in the tribal government election on March 3, the vast majority voted in favor of unity by re-electing the tribal leadership team that has been in office for the past several years.

By staying with the same tribal government officials, our tribal membership has sent a clear message to the community that they are pleased with the job our leadership team has done to lead our tribal nation.

Although there were other fine and capable members of our tribe who were vying for a seat on the Business Committee, the incumbents were a tough group to beat.

Richard Gomez has served our tribal community for decades by being involved on various committees and holding a variety of elected tribal positions. He brings significant wisdom and heart to his role on our tribal leadership team and makes every decision with both our ancestors and future generations in mind.

Last year he was selected as a recipient of a 2010 American Indian Heritage Month Local Leadership Award, which recognizes Native Americans who provide great leadership and have made significant contributions to enrich our community.

Kenneth Kahn was just 25 years old when he was first elected to serve on the Business Committee in 2003. He comes from a family of strong tribal leaders, including both of his grandparents as well as his parents. His mother currently serves on our Education Committee."
